Dejan Lovren on his Newcastle goal and Liverpool momentum

Dejan Lovren admitted any shot he takes on goal goes straight “into the stand” after scoring a thunderous opener in yesterday’s 4-0 win over Newcastle United at Anfield.

The Croatian hammered the ball into the top left corner after 11 minutes of the Boxing Day clash, which was followed in the second half by a Mohamed Salah penalty and goals from Xherdan Shaqiri and Fabinho.

The defender’s sweet strike was his seventh overall for Liverpool, and while the No.6 was pleased, he also reminded fans that his shots are normally more wayward.

“It was quite difficult to catch the ball, to be honest. Usually it’s a ball to kick into the stand, like defending a set-piece for me,” Lovren told Liverpoolfc.com.

“But luckily enough, I did it, I scored. It’s always great to score for Liverpool and hopefully we can do it again in the next couple of games because we need everyone now.

“There are tough two games now: Arsenal and Man City. We need to keep this momentum.”

Liverpool welcomed former boss Rafa Benitez back to Anfield, where his struggling Newcastle side were tipped to cause the Reds some problems post-Christmas.

However, a dominant display from Jurgen Klopp’s men, especially after the break, saw them go six points clear at the top of the league, with Manchester City losing to Leicester elsewhere.

“It wasn’t the first half we wanted; we had good chances but didn’t score – other than my shot – and it wasn’t easy,” Lovren said.

“But we did brilliantly in the second half, we kept our style of football and it was rewarded. It’s not easy to win 4-0 against a tough opponent who play five at the back.

“We created so many chances, it’s good for us. I heard the other results [in the Premier League] but it doesn’t matter – we are focused on ourselves.”
