Manchester United Facing Injury Crisis Ahead of Liverpool Match

Liverpool fans are worried about injured defenders but United’s injury list could be longer come Sunday.

Liverpool are going through something of an injury crisis as they prepare for Manchester United on Sunday, with Joe Gomez and Joël Matip out at centre half while Trent Alexander-Arnold and Nathaniel Clyne are question marks on the right.

United, though, look to have it far worse. Victor Lindelof and Alexis Sanchez have already been ruled out, while Luke Shaw, Anthony Martial, Matteo Darmian, and Chris Smalling are all questionable and were left out of the lineup against Valencia.

Manager Jose Mourinho had also hoped not to play Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, or Ashley Young on Wednesday despite including the trio on the bench, but all three were introduced with United trailing in a game they went on to lose.

“I made changes I didn’t want to make, which is frustrating because I didn’t want to play the three players that played in the second half,” Mourinho said following United’s 2-1 defeat in the Champions League, adding that those three would face Liverpool.

The rest of the team that faces Liverpool will depend on which of the players left out mid-week win their fitness battles ahead of Sunday, but no matter who does, United are unlikely to be able to run out anything like Mourinho’s first choice eleven.

Manchester United currently sit a disappointing sixth in the league and have earned just six points from their last five games, winning just one of them—the most recent, a 4-1 victory over Fulham last Saturday.
