Rumour Mongering: Dortmund Would Accept £50M for Christian Pulisic

According to the transfer speculators, Dortmund are softening their Pulisic stance.

Christian Pulisic hasn’t started in the Bundesliga for Borussia Dortmund since September. He’s played 50% fewer minutes than he had at this point last season. He’s refused to sign a new deal. And it appears sporting director Michael Zorc doesn’t count him amongst the club’s “essential” players.

Add it all up and you get a club willing—maybe eager, even—to cash in come January if someone is willing to pay the asking price. At least that’s the story being pushed this week by the Mirror, who believe Pulisic is being actively shopped—and that Dortmund would accept anything over £50M.

It’s the latest rumoured development in the Pulisic story, after previous claims Dortmund were willing to do a deferred deal for £70M that would see Pulisic stay until the summer and that Chelsea had lodged a bid well short of that. There have also been past claims that the player prefers Liverpool.

If there’s any truth to it, it would seem to reflect an acceptance on Dortmund’s part that with Pulisic’s current deal expiring in 2020 they don’t have the leverage to ask for £70M—especially when he’s played just 31% of league minutes for them this season and appears increasingly out of favour.

Pulisic’s value, rather than rising, has fallen this season, and the time for Dortmund to try to get an exorbitant fee for him would have been last summer—with two years left on his deal and before he saw his role at Dortmund curtailed. Now, even if their asking price has come down, £50M seems high.

Of course, at the end of the day it’s the Mirror talking about this. And there’s no hint of what Pulisic’s supposed suitors Liverpool and Chelsea are thinking, planning, or doing. About all that seems clear today is that Pulisic won’t be at Dortmund next season—and that’s seemed clear for a long time now.
