Guardiola: Liverpool clash is our chance to cut seven-point lead

Pep Guardiola sees Liverpool’s visit to the Etihad as little more than an opportunity for Manchester City to resurrect their Premier League title ambitions and reduce the gap at the top of the table to four points.

The Reds are unbeaten this season and in order to ensure that City aren’t left behind in the wake of a rampant Liverpool team, Pep Guardiola needs to mastermind a win over the Merseysiders.

While there will still be quite a few games remaining, a defeat for the champions would mean having to try and overcome a 10 point deficit which would be almost as impressive as becoming centurions last season.

Guardiola said: “The reality is clear, we are seven points down. I have the feeling it is a big opportunity for us to reduce the gap.

“We are going to focus on what we have to do to win the game. Everyone is talking if we lose, but what happens if we win? We are going to try to make our game and to fight as far as possible for our chance to win the Premier League.”

For Liverpool, it will play into their hands that City will need to come out and attack them unlike at Anfield earlier in the season when Guardiola had his players play rather passively, showing his opponents more respect than he would care to admit.
