Wijnaldum and Van Dijk are Somehow Ready to Face England Tomorrow

The Dutch Champions of Europe say they’re ready for action, if need be. The rest of us are still hungover/drunk.

To my shock, surprise, even horror, football hasn’t been cancelled forever, after Liverpool did the greatest thing that could ever be done. Not only has football not been cancelled forever, but apparently there are matches—important ones!—to be played. This week!

Not content to finish the year with the biggest trophy in club football, Dutch players Georginio Wijnaldum and Virgil van Dijk have played their way into contention for the UEFA Nations League trophy. Trophy? Is there a trophy for the Nations League? Does anyone actually know how this works? They will face off against England in (checks notes) Portugal?

In a semi-final. That part I know. It’s a semifinal, with Portugal and Switzerland on the other side.

Both Liverpool Champions of Europe say they are fit to play, once again proving that they are fucking mentality giants. I’m pretty sure I speak for the rest of Liverpool fandom when I say that I’m still revelling in #6, baby.

“I can play, but of course I don’t know if I will play,” Van Dijk told online Dutch publication Football Oranje.

“Last year we arrived at this complex after a lost final in the Champions League. At that time we did not play the first international match against Slovakia. But now we have won, that is different.”

Wijnaldum also chimed in, explaining how last year’s disappointment was harder to bounce back from, mentally, than a big final win and an even bigger celebration.

“Back then there was a chagrin, now I just want to play,” Gini added, “I have had enough sleep, I can just play, if the national coach wants it too. It doesn’t feel strange to be here now either. I am fit.”

And in case you’re wondering how a player as hungover or drunk as you still are could possibly play football, Gini had that covered too:

“Alcohol is for the holidays, not now.”

Gini didn’t look to be partying too hard (although he did drop his phone off the bus during the parade), but the same cannot be said about some of his teammates, including Big Virg who appeared to have more than a few. Nor can it be said about the man of the hour, Jürgen Klopp, who was absolutely blattered.

Even if Gini and Virg did party a little too hard, they’ll be facing off against fellow Champions of Europe Jordan Henderson, Joe Gomez, and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

So, if there is indeed a trophy, let’s hope some of our lads lift another one. Since they haven’t yet cancelled football, we hope they’ll need more practice ahead of the coming campaign.
