Official: Danny Ings is a Saint

The club and Reds all over can now officially bid the star-crossed striker farewell.

Liverpool fans get to bid adieu to another fan favorite as today Danny Ings completes his permanent transfer to Southampton. This isn’t a shock move - it was written into Danny’s loan to the Saints. But it still will likely touch a few hearts.

In his short time with the club, Danny inspired everyone with his strong engine, uncanny sense of space, and electric movement. His early returns looked positive and many fans instantly latched onto his positive attitude and clear ability.

Unfortunately, much like his fellow striker and other Daniel, injuries befell him. And as he fought for fitness, Ings found himself in a bit of a free-fall down the depth chart. The business of sports are ever fickle.

Still, the plucky Englishman kept plugging away. When the forward spots all locked up due to the form and quality of Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane, and Mohamed Salah, Ings needed to leave. Jurgen Klopp was reluctant to do so, but relented because there simply was no space.

And that’s how we got to this bittersweet moment. Ings seemed to recapture a bit of his from last season, finding the back of the net in his first full start and finishing the year with 7 goals and 3 assists for the Saints. That’s not a bad return for someone just getting back to regular duty after spending so much time on the trainers table.

All told, Liverpool fans will have nothing but kind words to say about Danny Ings. He gave his all for the club and managed to maintain his professionalism and positivity through what had to be a truly difficult moment in his career. Here’s hoping that he finds that spark and magic that seemed to be just on the cusp when he first signed with Liverpool. Godspeed, Danny!
