Official: Marko Grujic Re-Joins Hertha Berlin for 2019-20 Season

The 23-year-old midfielder is heading back to Germany for another year on loan.

Yesterday’s news that Marko Grujic was heading back to Germany for another year on loan with Hertha Berlin is official today, with the club announcing that the 23-year-old Serbian will spend another season at the club he excelled at in 2018-19.

Grujic made 23 total appearances for Hertha last season, scoring five goals and adding an assist, and while those numbers don’t necessarily stand out, injuries were the sole reason they weren’t higher and his impact when fit was clear to see.

With Grujic in the lineup, Hertha were on form to finish in the European places. Without him, they were on form to be relegated. He will get another season, then, to show what he can do with them—and, hopefully, to stay fit for a bigger part of it.

Further, according to David Maddock of The Mirror, Liverpool rejected an approach for Grujic from Bayern Munich. The German giants were seeking to sign Grujic on a permanent transfer this summer but Liverpool were not willing to consider it.

Instead, Jürgen Klopp was able to convince the player he remained in his long-term plans for Liverpool and would have a key role to play in the 2020-21 season, which could point to this being the 33-year-old James Milner’s last season at the club.

In football, though, a year is a long way off and rarely settled or certain. What we do know for now is that Grujic will spend the season at Hertha, he will start when fit, and that the Reds will recoup a £2M loan fee for sending him back to Germany.
