Jordan Henderson makes admission about playing as a centre-back

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has stated that he found playing at centre-half against Monterrey last Wednesday completely different to anywhere else he has played on the pitch.

The Reds went on to claim a 2-1 victory over the Mexican outfit. The victory ensured Liverpool a spot with Flamengo in the FIFA Club World Cup final, which takes place on Saturday.

Centre-back Virgil van Dijk missed the game against Monterrey due to illness. This forced Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp to play Henderson at centre-half, as both Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren were not in the squad that flew to Qatar due to injury.

“It was different to anything that I have been used to,” Henderson told the media. “I’ve played at full-back but I’ve never played there before.

“I just tried to do my best for the team and thankfully we got the win in the end.

“I don’t know what will happen with Virgil on Saturday. Fingers crossed he will be okay.

“Of course, if the manager needed me to go there again, I would do it. It is anything to help the team.”

Considering Henderson has never played at centre-half before, he did a decent job. It is an area on the pitch which can leave one very exposed, but he certainly did not embarrass himself.

The captain showed his versatility as a footballer. He is very similar to Liverpool utility James Milner in many ways. He can practically play anywhere on the pitch.

There is no guarantee that Van Dijk will be deemed fit for the final, which means Henderson may have to play at centre-back again.
