Jordan Henderson Explains the Origins of His Trophy Lift

We hope to be seeing more of it in the future.

As Liverpool fans relived the glory of winning the club’s sixth Champions League title last season, and with the Premier League set to pick back up later this month, Jordan Henderson was asked about his distinctive, shuffling trophy lift. We first saw glimpse of it in Madrid when the Reds won the Champions League, but Henderson has since also brought it out to raise the UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup trophies.

The inspiration for what will hopefully become a familiar sight?

His teammates.

“It was a little bit of banter in the changing rooms prior,” Hendo said. “Robbo was messing about, he’d always do the shuffle pretending to lift the trophy and stuff like that. So, when the time came I felt as though I just wanted to sort of do it together and use that sort of banter that we’d had previously in terms of the little shuffle and stuff.

“I just wanted to be able to see the lads’ faces just before I lifted it as well. That was really special for me, to be able to see the lads rather than just have my back to them.

“So, yeah, it was a little bit off the cuff, to be honest. After we did that [for] the Champions League the lads made sure I kept on doing it for the Super Cup and Club World Cup.”

There’s only a couple weeks until the proposed return of the Premier League, and Liverpool are only two wins away from Henderson getting to loft another trophy over his head.
