Liverpool Women Look to Continue Whiteley Turnaround Against Tottenham

Liverpool’s results have improved since Amber Whiteley took over as interim manager. The Reds host Tottenham on Sunday with three games left in the season.
Since appointing Amber Whiteley as interim manager for at least the remainder of the 2024-25 season, Liverpool FC Women have seen an uptick in form, with the Reds rising to fifth in the Women’s Super League and making it to the FA Cup semi-final.
In the latter competition, a 2-1 defeat at the hands of league leaders Chelsea deprived them of a trip to Wembley, but they deserve praise for their hard-fought performance and for beating second-place Arsenal in the quarter-final to even make it that far.
In the league, with only three games left in the season, fifth is the best the Reds can do as they’re 12 points off Manchester City in fourth. Still, after their struggles earlier on, recent results have shown promise and Whiteley wants to end the year on a high.
“We want to make sure we keep that fifth spot in the table now,” Whiteley said of a weekend meeting against Tottenham. “That means putting our best foot forward every day in training and maximising the time we have together. Each game, we want to be better.”
While Liverpool’s form has improved of late, Tottenham have continued to flounder in ninth in the 11-team league, with fewer points than games played and on pace to finish the season with a third fewer points than they managed in the league last year.
After welcoming Spurs to St Helens Stadium on Sunday, the Reds then host local rivals Everton the following week with the Blues currently four points back of Whiteley’s group. Their final game of the season will be away at Chelsea on the 10th of May.
“On Sunday I want us to get back on track at home again after the loss to Aston Villa,” the manager added. “Tottenham are not on a great run of form but they do pose real attacking threats in their forward line so we’ve got to be mindful of that.
“We need to approach this game with the same energy we started with at Brighton so it will be really important to have that drive and fight about us.”
