Spitting Incident Puts a Damper on Thrilling Match
As often is the case, bad choices by the few can tarnish what should be a great experience
Liverpool and Manchester City played out a high-intensity and incredibly skilled 2-2 draw at Anfield at the weekend, but the actions of a member of the home crowd has put a damper on the proceedings.
It has been alleged that a member of the Anfield crowd spit at Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola’s backroom staff during the first half of the top-of-the-table clash.
Liverpool FC has reported collecting “substantial evidence” on the alleged incident through a thorough review of the CCTV footage in the ground, and witnesses have been interviewed.
Should a culprit be identified, they will likely receive a lifetime ban from the ground and may face legal action, as the club are willing to hand any evidence over to Merseyside police.
The official club comment on the issue has condemned the alleged actions, which can be viewed as disgraceful: “Anfield is our home and we will ensure it is a safe, enjoyable environment for everyone attending and will not allow unacceptable isolated behavior to impact on our club’s values and principles.”
Fans and visiting teams can and should expect to be safe at Anfield, and while spitting is always unacceptable, it is certainly more so in the midst of a global pandemic.
While it’s unfortunate that such an alleged action may have taken place, it is reassuring that the club is taking the matter seriously.
