Liverpool’s Mac Allister on Dealing with Jet Lag in Early Kickoff

Early kickoffs coming out of the international breaks are especially difficult for Liverpool’s South American stars.

Liverpool have had more than their fair share of early Saturday kickoffs coming out of international breaks since Jürgen Klopp took charge, and there’s a solid case that at times it has made a real—and negative—impact on their league form

It’s especially difficult for their South America players like Alexis Mac Allister, players who often have CONMEBOL matches scheduled for Wednesday night—the early hours of Thursday morning in England—and then have to fly back across the Atlantic

“It’s very tough—jet lag, a long trip—but it is what it is,” said Mac Allister, reflecting on a positive result from Liverpool’s latest early kickoff following an international break. “We like playing football and we want to win and that’s why we did our best.

“Honestly it’s hard to play like this. We were in a meeting for Man City [on Friday] and I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I think they are really good but we are as well. In the first half maybe we didn’t defend as we can but in the second we were much better.”

Liverpool’s second half goal meant they took a point off title favourites Manchester City on and are now just a point back in third—with City in turn a point off new leaders Arsenal—and given it was on the road it has to be seen as a positive result.

Next up, the Reds turn their attention to Europe where they face LASK in the fifth group stage match of their Europa League campaign. After a stumble against Toulouse they remain top of the group but can’t afford anything less than a win on Thursday.
