Liverpool Cleared to Raise Anfield Capacity to 57,000 for Man United
Having passed the licensing test, the new Anfield Road end is set to be partially opened for Sunday’s game against Manchester United.
After a three month delay, Liverpool’s new Anfield Road stand is set to be partially opened for their match against Manchester United on Sunday after a successful test event was held earlier in the week and the new stand’s operating license granted.
The partial opening will take Anfield capacity to 57,000 and should allow the club to set a modern record for attendance, with a First Division match against Leicester City in 1973 with 56,202 credited by the club as the largest in the last fifty years.
Anfield’s largest recorded crowd of all time was 61,905 who watched an FA Cup tie between Liverpool and Wolves in February of 1952. When the new Anfield Road end is fully re-opened it is set to have an official capacity just shy of that mark at 61,000.
Following the entering into administration of construction company Buckingham Group over the summer, opening of the new Anfield Road end was pushed back from September, with an expected partial opening not expected until the new year.
A partial opening this weekend for Manchester United—and for any subsequent matches over the next month or two as the rest of the stand is finished—is positive news for the club and supporters and about a month ahead of the revised schedule.
