The Italian giants could move for the Atalanta midfielder due to potential player bans.

Liverpool FC have had long-term links with Atalanta’s Teun Koopmeiners, perhaps due to the Dutch connection with Pep Ljinders. Those rumours resurfaced early last month, and Liverpool have once again been mentioned as a potential landing spot for the 25-year-old Dutch midfielder.

This story comes from Gazetta Dello Sport, mainly about Juventus seeking midfield reinforcement due to player bans. Nicolò Fagioli is, of course, serving a seven-month ban due to violations of betting rules, and Paul Pogba could face a four-year ban stemming from his failed drug test.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Kalvin Phillips are mentioned as targets for the Bianconeri, but Spurs’ reluctance to let Hojbjerg go and Newcastle being ahead of the race in a loan deal for the latter have the Italian giants casting glances at Koopmeiners instead.

The report mentions that Koopmeiners is valued at £55 million but could need a higher fee for the deal to be completed due to Juve and Atalanta being direct rivals.

While I can appreciate Koopmeiners’ versatility and ability to play the 6, 8 and even 10 spots, Liverpool can probably do better to land a defensive midfielder with stronger ball-winning and interception skills. Unless, of course, the club wants a midfield comprised entirely of nimble ball progressors... which would be unorthodox as hell.
