He scored against Chelsea last night!

This feels like a happy coincidence since he just scored in the EFL Cup semi-final for Middlesborough against Chelsea last night, but The Standard’s Nizaar Kinsella is reporting that Liverpool FC are in a chase for the young midfielder’s signature.

The story is about Tottenham’s interest in the 21-year-old midfielder, adding them to a long list of admirers, including Manchester City, Manchester United and Liverpool. Middlesbrough are said to be prepared to field offers for Hackney in the summer but will not sell in this window unless a spectacular offer comes in for him.

Liverpool have a bit of a problem on their hands with the homegrown player quota, and a move for Hackney, a technically gifted defensive midfielder, would help to alleviate that whilst also addressing a positional need.

It is difficult to see Liverpool engaging in a bidding war for the player, which Middlesborough would definitely be keen to start. Perhaps the club’s record of playing and giving young talent a pathway to the first team would help sway Hackney, although United and Spurs could also both have an inside track by way of the player’s current manager, Michael Carrick, who played for both of those clubs.

It’s early days, but do not be surprised if Hackney’s name pops up again at the end of the season.
