Uruguay and Liverpool striker Darwin Nuñez was at the forefront of a clash between players and fans at the Copa America and was seen trying to throw a chair.

The facts around the incident following Wednesday night’s Copa America semi-final between Colombia and Uruguay remain less than entirely clear. We do know that there were problems with Colombian fans placed too close to the families of Uruguayan players and national team staff.

We also can infer that whatever security might have been in place wasn’t sufficient to stop Colombian fans from behaving aggressively towards the families of Uruguayan players and national team staff. And we know that players and staff then waded into the fray, which is when it all starts to get messy.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nuñez was certainly at the forefront of it, though, and while for many there may seem clear mitigating factors for it, there is also video of Nuñez returning to the fray—with a steel chair, no less—after the fighting has stopped and the families have been removed.

Liverpool and new head coach Arne Slot’s will have woken up to quite mess today, then, given the incidents took place around 3AM in the morning for them. And unsurprisingly, their only comment so far appears to be that they would like to gather all the facts before making comment.

We, too, wouldn’t mind getting a few facts in, as there’s certainly a world where one could at least imagine said facts making most people massively sympathetic towards Nuñez for entering the fray to protect his family if organisational and secretary breakdowns in fact endangered them.

We’re less certain there will be facts to make anyone sympathetic to his efforts to throw a chair—and the video evidence suggests everyone should be massively thankful to a security guard who hindered his efforts—but we’ll hope for the best. Whatever the hell that might mean in this situation.
