Xabi Alonso’s defending Bundesliga champions are said to be exploring signing Matip on a free transfer.

Despite being one of the most successful free transfers in Liverpool’s history and a key player throughout Jürgen Klopp’s time in charge at the club, struggles with fitness led the Reds to part ways with veteran defender Joël Matip when his contract expired at the end of the 2023-24 season.

Two months later, and the 32-year-old German centre half remains without a club. That could soon change, though, with reports out of Germany suggesting Bayer Leverkusen and manager Xabi Alonso have contacted Matip to explore the possibility of him signing on with the defending Bundesliga champions.

That’s the story according to Sky Germany, at least, and while it’s a move that would likely necessitate a pay cut compared to Matip’s Liverpool wages, from a sporting perspective it seems an ideal landing spot for the cultured, ball-playing defender who remains a favourite amongst Liverpool fans.

Hopefully, wherever it is that Matip ends up, a deal can be done quickly in order to get him into action with his new team while it’s still fairly early in their pre-season ahead of the 2024-25 season.
