Rumour Mongering: Liverpool Reject £4M Trabzonspor Bid for Nat Phillips
It’s well past time Liverpool did the right thing and let Nat Phillips move on with his career, and their continuing failure to do so is a bad look for the club.
Nat Phillips’ Liverpool purgatory looks set to continue for at least a little while longer today following reports that the Reds had rejected a £4M bid for the player from Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor two weeks after Cardiff City backed away from a potential deal.
That’s the latest according to The Athletic, who say Liverpool continue to believe their £8M asking price isn’t out of line for the player and that with multiple clubs interested including Championship sides like Cardiff and Burnley they aren’t pricing him out of a move.
Given Phillips has been stuck in the reserves or on loan since his 2020-21 breakthrough and the now 27-year-old has made just eight Liverpool appearances since, we can only hope the insistence on returning a significant fee doesn’t yet again block a permanent move.
Phillips has served the club well and played a significant role in earning a top four finish in that injury-hit 2020-21 season. Helping earn the club that significant financial windfall only to see his career held back by demands for an inflated fee is a bad look for the Reds.
Qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League is worth around £13M vs. £3M for the Europa League. Prize payouts for the knockout rounds see a similar disparity in payout scale. Phillips isn’t going to play for Liverpool. It’s time to let the player move on.
