Barcelona Reportedly Agree £70M Anthony Gordon Deal with Newcastle

Throughout the spring, Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon was widely reported to be in line to move to Bayern Munich in the summer. Now summer has arrived and that move won’t happen—but not because of any Liverpool interest despite late rumours of such.

Instead, it’s Barcelona who appear to have successfully swooped in to gazump Bayern to the 25-year-old, with a £70M transfer fee agreed, personal terms agreed, and a medical now set. This despite Gordon having previously agreed personal terms with Bayern.

Liverpool have previously held genuine interest and even tried to sign Gordon two summers ago in a move that would have seen the Liverpool-born forward come to Anfield for a big bag of cash while Joe Gomez headed in the other direction for a smaller bad of cash.

That deal fell through and there was no suggestion throughout the spring that the Reds might revive any interest in him despite the Bayern rumblings. When Barcelona began to be talked up as an option, though, Liverpool were inevitably added to the mix by journalists.

It appears though that such talk was largely speculative and based on past interest, and that Liverpool were never looking to rekindle their interest—or if they were it was quickly rebuffed by Gordon and they backed away before getting to talking terms with Newcastle.
