It seems ages have passed since, but in reality, Jürgen Klopp’s Reds proving to all the world that they definitely didn’t need Philippe Coutinho to succeed by putting four past champions elect Manchester City happened only two weeks ago. Since then, Liverpool have put paid to that idea with two consecutive losses, to 20th and 19th placed Swansea and West bromwich, respectively, stumbling out of the FA Cup in the process. Ah, the Liverpool way.
Meanwhile, newly promoted Huddersfield sit in a deceptively impressive 14th place, two points out of the relegation zone. They haven’t won in the league in their last six attempts, taking only three points in the process, scoring three goals, while conceding eleven. Their most recent run is one of three straight losses and a goal differential of 1-9.
In other words, the Terriers are in a spot of trouble, with top scorers Steven Mounié, Aaron Mooy and Laurent Depoitre managing only a single goal between them in the last six games. Manager David Wagner’s friendship with Klopp mattered little the last time the two met, with the Reds coming out comfortable 3-0 winners on the day, and the former Dortmund manager will be even less inclined to give up points this time round.

Following the abysmal showing on Saturday, swapping every single player wouldn’t be out of the question, but the lack of quality in depth in Liverpool’s squad means only a few will be rotated. Andrew Robertson and Joe Gomez are expected to return to the fullback spots, while Virgil van Dijk and Joël Matip will likely continue to work on their partnership in central defense.
Emre Can’s embarrassing display in midfield at the weekend and captain Jordan Henderson’s return from injury will in all probability see the two switch places, while Adam Lallana’s resurgent muscle problems and Daniel Sturridge’s imminent move to the Hawthorns means the front five remains intact. Loris Karius will look to perhaps make a save.
The Reds’ win over the tomorrow’s opposition kicked off their 17-game unbeaten run last time out, and optimistic fans will hope a thumping of the Terriers will start another cycle. If not, there will surely be some big deadline day action on Wednesday to cheer up the gloomier sections of the fanbase. Surely.
