Swansea and Wolfsburg Chase Liverpool Spare Part Markovic

Lazar Markovic doesn’t have a future at Anfield, but he isn’t short on suitors according to reports.

Lazar Markovic’s time at Liverpool has not gone according to plan, with the highly touted £20M signing struggling to overcome injury, being played out of position, and a string of uninspiring loan spells since first being brought to the club during the Brendan Rodgers era.

Under Jürgen Klopp, the 23-year-old Serbian winger has yet to make a single appearance—and he’s only made one appearance this season for the U23s. But that—and his just 38 total appearances across the past two-and-a-half seasons with six goals—hasn’t stopped other teams being interested.

Earlier in the window, a pair of Russian sides were said to want Markovic—but only on loan. At the time, Liverpool resisted, holding out hope for a permanent move for the player—or at least a loan somewhere he might better build up his transfer value. That may now pay off.

According to the BBC’s Phil McNulty, Swansea and Wolfsburg are now both looking to sign Markovic, and while a loan may still be an end result the possibility of a permanent deal is at least on the table, though both are likely to want to pay a cut-rate price if it’s the latter.

Even if it’s just a loan, though, a move to either side would do more for building up interest in Markovic come the summer. Or at least it will if it goes well. Loan or permanent deal, though, and Swansea or Wolfsburg, all that really matters at this point is finding Markovic a new home.

Hopefully, unlike in the summer when the transfer window closed with Markovic still at the club, that will happen within the next two days—for everyone’s sake.
