Rumour Mongering: Aaron Ramsey on Liverpool’s Radar?

You knew this one was coming.

So here’s a very predictable rumour that could possibly be true but is basically an unknown right now.

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey’s contract is expiring at the end of the season. While Arsenal were negotiating with him for a long time, contract talks have recently broken down and it looks very likely that he will leave the club at the end of the season. It’s the same kind of situation that Liverpool were in with Emre Can.

Liverpool have been linked with Aaron Ramsey an infinite number of times in the past. Going all the way back to when he was a teenager and went to Arsenal instead of us, it feels like there’s been constant suggestions that he will make the move to Anfield. With Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain having made the switch last summer, it does now feel like there’s more of a precedent for this kind of transfer.

And so, like clockwork, John Richardson of The Sunday Mirror reports that Liverpool “will lead the chase for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey after having a summer enquiry for the Wales international knocked back”. Richardson claims that Liverpool were interested in signing Ramsey this summer, but Arsenal were unwilling to sell at the time. With a new contract at the Emirates apparently no longer on the table, it looks like the race is on to sign the Welshman.

Ramsey wouldn’t be a bad stylistic fit for Klopp’s side. He seems born to play in a high pressing team, with a midfield three suiting him down to the ground. It does feel as though Liverpool are well stocked in the department of box to box midfielders, however, and it’s not clear what Ramsey can do that Naby Keita or James Milner can’t. His injury record is, to put it bluntly, horrific, which is the biggest red flag.

This story may be nothing, but it feels vaguely plausible, so we’ll see.
