John Achterberg on that late Mahrez penalty
Liverpool goalkeeping coach John Achterberg has revealed what happened off the pitch during the Premier League clash between Manchester City and Liverpool at Anfield last Sunday.
Immediately after Riyad Mahrez skied his late penalty kick to cost City the win, Achterberg began celebrating ecstatically on the touchline and was quickly congratulated by manager Jurgen Klopp.
Achterberg today spoke about the thinking that went on prior to that moment in the game, and how careful analysis and coaching ensured that, at the very least, goalkeeper Alisson Becker dived the right away when Mahrez took his spot kick.

“We have our talks before every game and obviously if anything changes on the pitch then we have a little bit of contact with each other because the penalty taker changed because the main one Aguero wasn’t on the pitch,” said Achterberg on Premier Leaue today.
“We had to look at who was going to take it and get the information through about what we thought was going to happen. That’s what we tried to do.”
Achterberg, however, refused to reveal how that information was discovered or relayed.
“That would be the secret of how we work!” he said.
“We have an analysing department, we were talking to Alisson and Simon (Mignolet) and the other goalies what they think, and we decide.”
