Watch: Joe Gomez Brilliant Start to 2018/19
The young Liverpool defender impressed early and often this season, and is a major part of our new found defensive stability.
As the summer transfer window was drawing to a close, and it became apparent that both Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip would be out with injuries, the Liverpool Twittersphere howled and moaned about the need to bring in another senior centerback. Instead, the transfer window closed and previously unproven at centerback Joe Gomez got the nod.
It turns out that Jurgen Klopp knows a thing or two about football and footballers, because Joe Gomez has been outstanding in his 10 appearances, mostly at centerback, for Liverpool this season.
Gomez, still just 21-years-old, has taken this injury crisis as a real opportunity to finally break into the side at his natural position. In doing so, he’s managed to occasionally outshine his world-class centerback partner Virgil van Dijk. He has shown awareness and composure at the back, and is a big reason why Liverpool have conceded just three goals in league play, and just eight in all competitions.
So far this season, we’ve seen smart decision-making from Gomez, knowing when to step up to intercept a pass, when to make an important tackle, or when stay behind the attacker and slow the play down until help can arrive. We’ve seen goal line clearances. We’ve seen breaking the lines with killer passes into attackers’ feet, and even the occasional decision to carry the ball forward out of the back.
Gomez has had such an excellent start, he’s been keeping One of the World’s Best Defenders™ Degsy Lovren out of the squad. Lovren might get more games in the coming weeks as he returns to full fitness, but Gomez has really impressed so far this season. Long may it continue.
