Joe Gomez Ready For A Hectic Festive Period
Oh, you say you missed football over international break, did you?
There are important months of football, and then there are important months of football. If Liverpool have ambitions for major silverware this season, we’ll know a great deal about those odds following the next month and a bit of matches.
While they can’t secure domestic or European glory in the next month, they can certainly lose it. Between now and January 3rd, Liverpool play nine league matches—roughly a quarter of the season—and two vital Champions League fixtures. Sprinkle in two derbies (Merseyside and Manchester United), Arsenal at home, and City away, and this month is sure to keep us on the edge of our seats.
For what it’s worth, young standout defender Joe Gomez thinks that this club is capable of competing on multiple fronts.
“In past seasons I think it’s been a really defining period in the season for us,” Gomez said to the club’s official site.
“So we know how important it is and how tough it’s going to be with the amount of games [there are] in a short period of time, but we’re ready.
“All teams in the Premier League face this same task and we’ve just got to be ready for it and try to get as many points as we can.
“There are a lot of games, especially around Christmas and New Year, with a couple of days of recovery, but I think this year we’ve got such a strong squad, so much strength in depth, and that will make it easier than in previous years.”
On paper, this is the deepest Liverpool squad we’ve seen in a long time. Still, as we saw recently with our Spinal Tap drummer situation in midfield, it only takes a couple of injuries to create selection headaches for Kloppo, and fatigue for the lads.
The best way to get this busy period started is with a couple of wins, today against Watford, and Wednesday against PSG. And while they’re at it, beating the Ev next weekend would be nice too. The same goes for Burnley, and then—well, you get the idea.
