Klopp Talks Wijnaldum’s Team Importance

The boss loves Gini as much as we do.

Georginio Wijnaldum has no time for your negative narratives. Ever since he arrived at Anfield from Newcastle, the midfielder has dealt with an avalanche of doubters and skepticism at his abilities and what he brings to the team.

But Wijnaldum slowly proved himself through hard work and a willingness to play in any position on the pitch and do anything that Jürgen Klopp asks of him. Also his smile is like pure sunshine, and frankly, he seems like a delightful human being.

That makes it even sweeter that Wijnaldum has quietly made his mark on this team, despite the many superstars he plays alongside.

After Liverpool’s excellent victory against Arsenal on Saturday, Klopp took time out to compliment Wijnaldum’s performance.

“He’s an outstanding player,” said the manager. “He combines a lot of things that you need. On a one-on-one situation, he can keep the body between the opponent and the ball, then pass the ball.

“I don’t know how many positions he’s played. In the double-six he plays really well. He can play all three positions in midfield and that’s really nice. All the boys are really versatile, to be honest.

“Hendo came in on Saturday and played the half-space and helped so much with how we defended. He was really lively. But Gini is in a good moment.”

While there has been a significant amount of variation in the midfield this season, Wijnaldum has consistently remained in the team more than any other option. His contributions will be crucial in the back half of this season, and particularly on Thursday when Liverpool face Manchester City in a top of the table clash.
