Leroy Sane sends Liverpool title message after 2-1 win

Leroy Sane has warned Liverpool that Manchester City will be hot on their heels after the champions beat the Reds at the Etihad Stadium on Thursday, reducing the gap between the two sides to four points.

Liverpool had the chance to extend their gap to 10 points but a poor start to the game and the finest of margins combined to see Pep Guardiola’s side win the three points.

Sane, the scorer of the winning goal, says that he and his teammates will be hungrily pursuing Liverpool between now and the end of the season.

“We’ve put more pressure on ­Liverpool,” said the German forward. “We’re just four points behind them — and they know it, too.

“It was one of the ­biggest ­performances since I came here. Liverpool are, at the moment, maybe the best team in Europe or the world, so we’re happy we beat them. The players all felt how ­intense it was, especially given how important the game was. It was ­really tense.

“You could see in every tackle, in every pass, everyone was really focused on the game and not to make mistakes. One wrong pass, one mistake, and you could get ­punished.

“So it was really important to win against Liverpool. It gives you more confidence to know we are closer and it’s not over. We’re always going to fight until the end, it doesn’t matter what the scoreline is.

“We always want to score, to show who we are and how we play. We ran a lot and fought a lot, and everyone could see how much we wanted to win the game.”
