Gomez: We Have “So Much Gratitude” For Klopp

The defender had nothing but praise for his manager after Champions League win.

One of the best things about this season: aside from the trophy and the 97 league points, is how clear it is that these players get along. While they’re playing well together on the pitch, they’re also friends off the pitch, and that’s perfectly clear.

The man who is responsible for crafting this particular mix of personalities is manager Jürgen Klopp.

“All of us have so much gratitude to have a manager like him,” Joe Gomez said after their monumental sixth Champions League win on Saturday.

“For me personally, he has done so much for me and all the lads think the same. He is an unbelievable manager and someone we owe a lot to. It shows the togetherness in the group and how much we all value him as a manager.”

What’s the key to his success with his players?

“I think it is just his energy,” Gomez said. “Not just the tactical side of things but him as a person, that’s why there is such a connection. That is why we want to play for him, why we want to celebrate with him when we win because he is one of the reasons we do it.

“It is special. He brings so much value to us and he shows us what it means to play for this club. I am quite young but I know I am blessed to have a manager like him. I don’t think there are many out there who do what he does. We are lucky.

“It is what dreams are made of really. It is the pinnacle for us. The Premier League campaign was bitter-sweet but this is what it was all about. Now we have something to show for what all the lads have done. It’s unbelievable, it’s history.”

Before his injury in December, Gomez was having a break out season. With luck, he’ll remain uninjured next season and continue his development so that he can create that mammoth partnership with Virgil van Dijk that we’ve all been dreaming of.
