Liverpool FC Women: Looking at Sunday’s Victory, How to Watch Wednesday’s Cup Match

The Reds hope to continue their dominant league start in the Continental Cup group game on Wednesday.
Liverpool FC Women took their place at the top of the FA Women’s Championship yesterday as their strong start to the 2020/21 campaign continued with a 2-1 victory over Coventry United, who are now eighth. The Reds have won three and drawn one, and now sit on 10 points, two points clear of second-placed Durham, who dropped points in a draw with Leicester City on Sunday.
The Reds started strongly, with Melissa Lawley and Amalie Thestrup scoring in the first half, Lawley’s strike coming just 11 minutes into the match. The game was hard-fought, however, with Coverntry having a number of promising chances in each half, and Kirsty Linnet, who provided the assist for the opening goal, might have been concerned about her near misses early on (one off the woodwork, and one ruled out as offside).
Luckily, however, Thestrup completed the barrage on the Coventry goal in the 33rd minute, scoring her first goal for the club and Liverpool’s second of the match after intercepting a backpass and beating Coventry keeper Sue Wood. Thestrup posted a video to the club’s Twitter account after the match, delighted to open her account with Liverpool.

The Reds had another goal ruled out for offside after the interval, which made for a nervy finish as the opposition took a goal back with a powerful Becky Anderson strike in the 71st minute, keeping Liverpool on the ropes in the final stages.
Alongside the win and Thestrup’s first goal for the club, the Liverpool Women’s side achieved a record: defender Lucy “Paz” Parry, 16 years and 150 days old, came on as a first-half substitute to become the side’s youngest ever player, beating Maz Pacheco’s previously-held record of 16 years and 212 days. Parry came on as a planned substitution, replacing Becky Jane, who is recovering from an injury.
Manager Vicky Jepson tweeted her good wishes to Perry after the match, emphasizing Perry’s promotion through the age groups at the club after joining at age 8.

The Reds are in action again this week, meeting Manchester United Women on Wednesday in a Continental Cup group game at 2 pm BST (9 am EST).
