Liverpool Reportedly Rule Out Marko Grujic or Harry Wilson Loan Departures

Despite an overpacked squad and reports of loan interest, Grujic and Wilson will likely be staying put this season.

Despite earlier reports that Marko Grujic could be set to return to Germany on loan for another season with Werder Bremen said to be interested in the 24-year-old midfielder, it appears as though he will be remaining at Anfield this season.

As reported by The Athletic’s James Pearce, it is also expected that Harry Wilson will remain until at least January, with no club currently willing to meet the Reds’ £20M valuation of the young Welsh winger and Liverpool unwilling to send either out on loan.

The duo will be joined by Xherdan Shaqiri, with it being previously reported that interest in the Swiss international had faded despite the player being held out against Arsenal in the League Cup last week with a sale said to be pending at the time.

In the cases of Grujic and Wilson, barring a late change on either the part of Liverpool or any potentially interested parties, it appears in the end that the club are determined to stick to their plans to only sanction permanent departures.

However, with Liverpool now out of the League Cup and with depth added both to midfield and in attack, it’s fair to ask when how Grujic or Wilson will get minutes this season—and if that will hurt any longer term prospects of a sale for the duo.

Quality depth is one thing, but having players like Wilson and Grujic—and Shaqiri—in a position where none will likely even make the bench unless Liverpool are hit by multiple injuries doesn’t seem like it’s in anybody’s best interest.
