Virgil van Dijk on Liverpool’s Shock Defeat: We Should Have Done Better

That’s an understatement.

Well. That was, as the kids might say, not good.

It was so terrible, in fact, losing 7-2 to Aston Villa, that it’s hard to even believe it happened. Regardless, it was an actual football match, and no one involved in the shambles should be in any way hiding from the disaster. Least of all Liverpool centre back Virgil van Dijk.

“It’s hard to lose the way we have lost tonight”, Van Dijk told Sky Sports.

“First and foremost, well done to Aston Villa. You have to give them the credit they deserve.

“But we are looking at ourselves, it just felt like one of those performances where we just weren’t 100 per cent at it from the start until the finish.

“The goals we conceded, we should have done better, but also the chances we had - because we had many - we should have done better.

“It’s key to not get crazy or anything but we have to be stepping it up. The performance level between the last game against Arsenal in the league and today was too big. All of us, everyone, has to take responsibility.”

I kind of don’t know how to think about a result like this. A lot of players will now leave for the international break, and perhaps that’s what’s needed, so everyone can return with a clear head for Everton. It’s going to take some time to process. Whatever happened there, let’s all hope things can get back on track soon enough so that we can Never Mention It Again.
