Cardiff Reportedly Negotiating Marko Grujic Loan Return

The newly promoted side want to bring the Liverpool midfielder back for another season.

After spending a promising six months with Cardiff that saw the Welsh club earn promotion back to the Premier League, 22-year-old Marko Grujic’s future is undecided, with Liverpool expected to give the young Serbian international pre-season to try to win a first team role.

If he doesn’t, though, another season on loan could be on the cards, and according to The BBC, Cardiff have already been in contact in order to lay the foundations for just such a move should it be decided that a full year away from Anfield would serve Grujic best.

Whether he does end up heading off on loan—to Cardiff or elsewhere—may depend on whether the club sign another midfielder following the collapse of the Nabil Fekir deal. If they do, it’s hard to see where his minutes would come from if he stayed at Liverpool.

In that case, given his age and stage in development, a return to Cardiff where he would be a regular starter would seem preferable to keeping him around at Anfield to maybe see minutes in the League Cup. According to The BBC, Grujic will also get a say in the matter.

At best, even if Liverpool don’t sign another midfielder in the coming weeks, his minutes are nearly certain to be more limited if he stays than if he heads out on loan, and Cardiff will be hoping he enjoyed his six months with them enough to push for a return regardless.

Whatever he and Liverpool decide in the end, that choice could end up critical both to his development as a player and to his long-term chances of establishing himself as a Liverpool player.
