New milestone for Alexander-Arnold as youngster is handed World Cup start

Trent Alexander-Arnold can add ‘World Cup starter’ to an increasingly impressive CV after Gareth Southgate selected the Liverpool man for England’s final group game against Belgium on Thursday evening.

Tottenham Hotspur’s Kieran Trippier started against Tunisia and Panama but, with England’s place in the knockout stages already confirmed, Alexander-Arnold has been handed an opportunity to impress against Roberto Martinez’s side and will look to help his team towards top spot.

A strong performance from the 19-year-old could potentially give Southgate a selection headache for the upcoming Round of 16 game against either Colombia or Japan.

The news represents yet another milestone for the right-back after his excellent breakthrough season at Anfield.

Alexander-Arnold saw off competition from Joe Gomez to make the spot his own and received widespread plaudits for his displays on Liverpool’s run to the Champions League final.

It is further cause for excitement for Liverpool supporters, many of whom believe he has the potential to become one of the best in his position.

Alexander-Arnold becomes only the fifth teenager to start for the Three Lions in the World Cup.

He is expected to line-up against Thorgan Hazard, brother of Chelsea star Eden.

England kick-off against Belgium at 19.00 UK time.
