World Cup 2018: Day One Schedule and How to Watch Russia vs. Saudi Arabia
The World Cup kicks off today with hosts Russia taking on Saudi Arabia.
WORLD CUP 2018 | DAY ONE
Russia vs. Saudi Arabia | 4PM BST/11AM EST
If you were to sort through the 31 other countries at this summer’s World Cup and told to pick one of them out to face off against hosts Russia, it would be hard to come up with a less inspiring option than Saudi Arabia, FIFA’s 67th ranked nation.
Russia, meanwhile, are a bit of an unknown given they qualified automatically and all their games in recent years have been friendlies as a result. But the general consensus is that they probably aren’t that good, either, and that if they hadn’t been hosts they would have struggled to get here.
Still, it’s the World Cup, and you have to start somewhere—at least once you get through the interminable, inevitable song and dance of the opening ceremonies. And Russia, for all that their squad doesn’t look great on paper, will have the crowd behind them. And, well, it’s the World Cup, so you’ll even watch a middling match-up. At least on day one.
