Xherdan Shaqiri Now Expected to Remain at Liverpool

Despite being held out the League Cup due to a pending sale, the Swiss international will likely not be leaving.

When Xherdan Shaqiri was held out of the League Cup against Arsenal last Thursday by manager Jürgen Klopp, it was because a departure for the 28-year-old was believed to be imminent. However, imminent doesn’t mean certain.

At least in this case, as the latest reports from journalists with ties to the club claim that the Swiss international will in fact not be leaving Liverpool now, with interest in the player seemingly fading as deadline day approached.

According to The Evening Standard’s David Lynch, barring a late surprise Shaqiri is now set for another season trying to stay fit—and then trying to find minutes if he can—with the Reds. Which might have been nice to know before last Thursday.

Shaqiri had played well in a makeshift midfield role the week before against Lincoln, and with him reprising that role instead of having Harry Wilson pushed into it, Liverpool would likely have had a better chance of advancing.

If he is now set to remain at the club, it is likely he will be third choice for either of Sadio Mané or Mohamed Salah’s wide forward positions behind Diogo Jota, as well as being available to offer emergency midfield depth.
