Premier League could change concussion rules after Karius injury

After Loris Karius suffered a concussion during the Champions League final, “concussion bins” could be introduced in the Premier League at the urging of doctors.
Karius sustained the injury in a clash with Sergio Ramos but was mistakenly allowed to continue, with the concussion only confirmed by a subsequent scan in the United States after Liverpool’s medical officials observed the symptoms.
That has led brain injury experts to call for an overhaul of the present regulations and while the efforts of Premier League doctors to better protect players in this respect predate the incident in Kiev, it has no doubt strengthened their case.
According to the Telegraph, their idea is to allow players to leave the field for a period of ten minutes if they are thought to have suffered a concussion, during which time a temporary substitution can be made.

If medics believe the affected player cannot continue, that substitution could then become permanent.
They have also urged the Football Association to allow clubs to make a fourth change in similar circumstances, fearing that some will be made to play on and could exacerbate a dangerous head injury.
It is believed that no proposal has been formally put forward as yet, but a sub-committee has been tasked with formulating one.
Meanwhile, UEFA are reviewing their own concussion protocols, meaning the Champions League regulations could also change.
Since the measures would constitute an alteration to the laws of the game, they will require a green light from the International Football Association Board.
